My work stems from an interest in primitive religions, typically located within indigenous cultures far removed from our own industrialised and technological society. These people often hold animistic worldviews, which suggest the idea of nature pervading divine powers.
After collating natural imagery from a variety of sources, the process of drawing, montage, print and hand stitch allows the creation of mysterious visuals, which in turn aim to echo the essence of the concept.
Combining my interests in narrative photography, conceptual art and illustration I produced a contemporary collection of collage and print presenting my view of old age. Motivated by the diagnoses of dementia in my grandmother and the realisation her memories would soon be lost, I documented the elderly people I would pass on a daily basis. I began collecting photographs found in thrift shops after the thought of these strangers becoming lost in time. These people etched in the old dusted photographs were once someone’s family and had become lost over the years, down generations eventually ending up in charity shops, unwanted. The thought of one day forgetting my own grandmother inspired me to document the lives of others.

The structured arrangements of rocks and crystals have been the source of inspiration for my work. Their forms encompass the geometrical, clean-lined properties that my practice encapsulates. Contextually I envisage interiors as the environment for this collection and strive to make versatility and adaptability the key focus of my designs. My selected materials and measured, minimal designs embrace contemporary living and have flexible applications in domestic or commercial spaces. Texturally, the flock vinyl and staggered layered shapes create an enquiring tactile quality that heightens the sense of touch, while also creating an inspiring visual stimulus.
My work is inspired by chance and its relationship with order. Though I have a natural tendency towards working with obsessive processes, I am currently interested in challenging this by introducing elements which are beyond my control. By imposing methodical systems on the unpredictable, I question whether sense and meaning can be found in disorder.
